Ibn Taymeeyyah (Allaah shower him with mercy) stated:

“The Companions have an understanding of the Quran. This understanding is obscured to most of the later generations. They have knowledge of the Sunnah’s matters and the Messenger’s different conditions. Most of the later generations are not aware of these, also.”

The Companions saw the Messenger and the revelation. They personally accompanied the Messenger. Thus, they knew of his sayings and actions. They would use this knowledge as evidence for their positions. Many of the later generations didn’t know this.
